Today's Strategic HR ? Supporting the achievement of financial ...

Sound Human Resource management is as essential as financial management in today?s business environment. If employees are distracting each other, unmotivated, ill-trained or worse, ignorant of how their efforts either facilitate or detract from company goals, what?s the point of reporting financials and talking about fiscal responsibility?

Every company job must contribute to the bottom line. For HR this means certain competencies are essential:

  1. Extensive knowledge of the company?s main lines of business;
  2. Knowledge of finance, sales and marketing, efficiency strategies and operations;
  3. Knowledge of organizational strategic planning and setting strategic goals;
  4. Keen understanding of how division/department action plans support strategic goal achievement;
  5. Understanding the variety of talent activities that could support the?achievement?of company goals; and
  6. Development of HR strategic plans

Over the last 50 years HR?s mission has changed. ?Gone are the days of ?recruiting qualified candidates? or ?training and staff development.?

  • 1960s to 80s ? Recruitment, training and record keeping
  • 1980s to 2000 ? Uninterrupted supply of qualified, well-trained employees
  • Today ??Align comprehensive talent management with the company?s strategic plan to facilitate the achievement of company goals

For more HR mission statements www.missionstatements.com.?

All company strategic goals including purely technical goals such as finance or IT have numerous and related human resource implications. If a strategic goal is to increase company profitability, consider these human resource-related questions:

  1. Do you have the right competencies in the Finance office?
  2. Does the CFO have performance problems?
  3. What drives revenue? Can people make a difference? Which jobs have key influence in financial success?
  4. Are senior leaders held accountable (perf. eval.) for their share of revenue activities?
  5. Does the senior leadership team work collaboratively together toward financial ends?
  6. Do financial reports provide data that accurately reflect progress toward goals so that management can make sound decisions?
  7. Does every employee understand the importance of key financial indicators?
  8. Do senior leaders, supervisors, and front line job descriptions include financial end results?
  9. Does the compensation program reward good performance in finance?
  10. What employee-oriented barriers might interfere with revenue increases?
    • Are the barriers attitude-based (uncooperative, disgruntled or toxic employees)?
    • Are they competency-based? Performance-based?
    • Employee relations-based? Poor engagement, poor management?
    • Employee poor health or stress-related? Absenteeism, presenteeism?
    • Tools and materials-based?

And finally,

11. Does the corporate culture and values reinforce financial stewardship?

Think strategically and good luck!!

Relationship Advice From Colbie Caillat ? Fresh 102.7

(Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images)

(Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images)

Much of Colbie Caillat?s music details the ups and downs a relationship can bring. ?Lucky? was written with Jason Mraz and tells the story of falling in love with your best friend. Since Colbie has said it?s a song she relates to we had to go straight to the source and ask her: do you tell your guy friend when you?re crushing on him?

Colbie filled CBS Local in on whether or not to tell that guy how you feel as well as what she has learned from her own music. She also admitted that many of her songs are from her friends going through good and bad relationships.

?My song ?Shadow? on the new record I wrote for my best friend Brianna,? she confessed. ?She was dating a guy that wasn?t treating her very well at all. She deserved better but it took her a long time to see that.?

This experience carried over into her live show.

?I tell people at my shows I think you?re better off to be alone than to be with someone who doesn?t treat you right. That?s something else I think about too and I try to tell people,? she said. ?If you?re not getting someone that deserves you and treats you as amazing as you deserve to be treated, then why not be alone and have a fun life and not be told what to do??

So what if someone has a crush on their best friend ? should she tell him? Colbie gave us some insight.

?It depends how the other person is interacting with them. If they think there are signs that the person feels that way,? she said. ?I think anyone would be flattered to know that the other person either has a crush on them or is in love with them. I don?t think it should really affect the friendship. I think everyone would want to know that. I think you should tell him.?

Sometimes even Colbie learns from the songs she has written.

?On my song, ?I Never Told You,? it really does remind me to speak my mind more,? she confessed. ?With songwriting I express my feelings in my songs, but not in person. So every time I sing ?I Never Told You? I remember, ?You know what, tell that person next time.? Whoever it is. If it?s your boyfriend, your friend, or your family member. Tell them what?s on your mind, what?s in your heart because people would rather know than not know.?

-Annie Reuter, CBS Local

EVOLUTIONMAN: Review: Skin Cancer Prevention App

EVOLUTIONMAN: Review: Skin Cancer Prevention App

Review: Skin Cancer Prevention App

Earlier this year, we reviewed an app from Solaveil that helped you to put on sunscreen. Now, we have another app for you. Just because you're done with fun in the sun, doesn't mean you don't have any work to do in skincare prevention. Aside from the fact you should be wearing SPF daily, all those days outdoors means you should?monitor?your skin for any changes. Luckily, researchers at the University of Michigan have developed an iPhone app for your phone that makes checking for cancerous moles easy.?

UMSkinCheck?provides tools to help users identify suspicious moles and keep track of them. Since remembering how new a mole is can be hard, you'll have years of scans to help you figure out if it appeared before or after that trip to the beach. Since pictures never lie,the pics saved in this app can provide an accurate representation of your moles for your dermatologist to see. The only con we saw was that you'll need a second person you're comfortable enough with to get naked and take pictures of your skin in various poses, including your bum.?

This app also has other handy tools, including reminding you when you need to perform your self exam, and your yearly full-body scan. All in all, a very handy app that is free for download from the iTunes store.?

WYANDOTTE: Pay freezes, high-deductible health insurance key to ...

WYANDOTTE ? Wage freezes and higher health insurance deductibles are common threads in labor contracts with teachers, administrative assistants and maintenance workers employed by the school district.

The Board of Education unanimously approved three-year contracts Tuesday with the Wyandotte Education Association, the Wyandotte Education Administrative Assistants Association and American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 1055 that had previously been ratified by their members.

The highest profile of those contracts is that between the school district and the 292 members of the teachers? union.

The secretaries? union represents 26 members and there are 51 maintenance workers.

A contract still must be negotiated with AFSCME Local 1430, which represents 141 members of the Special Education Center Programs Paraprofessionals. Other unsettled contracts are with the 26-member United Auto Workers Local 174 food service workers and the 16-member Wyandotte Administrative Association.

School Supt. Carla Harting and Business Manager Kenneth Laub represented the school district in negotiating sessions with teachers. The WEA team was represented by President Glen Meisel, Vice President John Mitroka and Jordan Harris, a Michigan Education Association Uniserv director assigned to the WEA.

According to Harting, wages and benefits were the issues discussed. She said all unions in Wyandotte have step advancement by the number of years they have worked, common in the education field.

?The teachers accepted a freeze in step advancement for the 2011-12 school year,? Harting said. ?We also added a new step at the bottom of the salary schedule.?

She said the teachers? union took a freeze on steps for the school year just ending, even though there was a provision in its 2011-12 agreement that members could receive steps if an 8 percent fund balance existed when the school district?s audit is completed in October. However, this agreement voids that provision.

?We agreed they would accept a step freeze for 2011-12 and receive steps instead for 2012-13,? Harting said. Continued...

Teachers, as well as the employees represented by the secretaries? and maintenance workers? unions, took a hard cap on benefits. The state has determined the maximum amount a district can pay for each employee?s health care. For one person, the amount is $5,500; for two people, $11,000; and for a family, $15,000.

This move does not necessarily translate into a substantial increase in the amount school employees will pay for health care. Harting said employees were paying between 10 percent and 20 percent of the cost of their health care premiums prior to this agreement. Under the new plan, employees will have no cost to the benefit plan if they accept a high deductible, between $1,000 and $2,000.

?If they take the high-deductible plan, there will be no deduction from their pay,? she said. ?They have the option of selecting a plan with a lower deductible ($150 or $300). They must pay the difference in cost between the high-deductible plan and the lower-deductible plan.?

All three contracts include annual wage and benefit reopeners.

Meisel could not be reached for comment.

The superintendent said she is pleased to begin the school year with settled contracts.

?All unions understood the difficult financial times we currently are facing and came to the table with that knowledge,? she said. ?I appreciate all the hard work of all the negotiations team that made my first experience as the negotiator for the district successful in settling contracts before the start of the year.?

Those sentiments were echoed by Robert Kirby, Board of Education president, who said the entire board was pleased with Harting and her staff for working so hard to get the contracts settled. He said the board believes the remaining three union contracts will be settled soon.

?It is always nice to start the school year off right,? Kirby said. ?We preach that for your kids, and handling these contractual issues is a great way for everyone to start the school year on a good note. I would also like to thank all the employees for working with our administration and showing their knowledge of how we are funded and their willingness to come to an agreement. We have always had a great relationship with our staff and think very highly of them.?

internal oak doors - Doors To Suit Your Interior

When it comes to choosing doors for inside your house, you think about the main reasons for having them and what they need to be like. You need privacy, strong doors for muffling sound, containing cosy warmth, and giving you your individual spaces within the house. You need them to look great and wear even better. Sometimes when it comes to materials for your house, traditional is best, and that is certainly the case with internal oak doors.

Oak is a long-standing building material for houses, partly because a well-made oak door will last generations and will endure all sorts of rough or repetitive usage. However it looks great as well if you let the natural grain shine through, as it can be in keeping with almost all styles. Oak doors are traditionally associated with older houses or period-style decor, but although they will go perfectly in a country cottage or Victorian townhouse they can also look very modern, whether your decor is sleek and new age or natural and raw.

Internal oak doors suit the majority of interior design choices from seaside and nautical to classic and luxurious. They are the right choice for keeping your children's rooms quiet, adorning your leather and wood study, or keeping the appetizing smell of dinner confined to the kitchen. Even if you choose to paint them to better match your decor, they sill have the benefit of being an organic material with incredible durability and lasting power.

Buying a timber door you can be certain that you are buying a sustainable material, and the sturdiness and permanence of oak, in contrast to many disposable or easily broken synthetic materials, is an efficient and ethical choice as the door will last and last. You may even choose to take them with you if you move! The reasons for buying internal oak doors are manifold, and you have more choice than other materials since, in addition to painting them, you can decide between an array of stains and finishes that highlight the beauty of the original wood.

Perhaps as well as in your home you are looking to add a classic and impressive touch to your office or company, making sure privacy is key and stunning appearance is not compromised. The bold time-proven look of oak and its practical qualities as a wood make it the clear leading choice when choosing doors for inside your home.

Writing about timber supplies, Zoe Robinson aims to provide readers with informative knowledge into her experience gained within this area and offer readers the chance to view a website she has experienced positively. View a range of internal oak doors today.

A look at cable, satellite TV earnings reports

Cable and satellite TV companies have been releasing their earnings reports for the latest quarter.

The second quarter is usually a weak one for pay-TV services because students cancel their subscriptions ahead of the summer holidays, and some "snowbirds" cancel their winter home subscriptions before heading to their summer homes.

Here is a summary of earnings reports for selected companies and what they reveal about the industry's prospects:

? July 19: Verizon Communications Inc. says it added 120,000 FiOS video customers to end with 4.5 million in June.

Dish Network Corp. says it lost a net 10,000 subscribers, which was smaller than analysts predicted in a typically week quarter for pay TV operators. It ended the quarter with 14.1 million subscribers in the U.S.

? July 24: AT&T Inc. says it added 155,000 U-verse TV subscribers to end with 4.1 million.

? Aug. 1: Comcast Corp. says it lost 176,000 video subscribers, though the rate of decline has slowed. It ended the quarter with 22.1 million to remain the nation's largest.

? Aug. 2: DirecTV Inc. says it lost 52,000 U.S. subscribers, the first quarter it has lost subscribers. DirecTV ended the quarter with 19.9 million U.S. subscribers, making it the second-largest provider of pay-TV signals in the country, after Comcast. DirecTV's Sky Brasil and PanAmericana added 645,000 subscribers. That was up from 472,000 a year ago and the best result ever for the company.

Time Warner Cable Inc., the second-largest cable company, says it lost 169,000 subscribers in the second quarter, a record for the company. It ends the quarter with 12.3 million.

? Aug. 7: Charter Communications Inc., the country's fourth-largest cable-TV provider, lost 72,000 TV customers in the quarter to end with 4.3 million.

Cablevision Systems Corp. has stemmed the loss of TV subscribers for the second quarter in a row, at the cost of holding its prices steady. It held the number of TV subscribers steady at 3.3 million.

? Aug. 8: Dish Network Corp. reiterated that it lost 10,000 subscribers, leaving it with 14.1 million and as the third-largest provider of pay-TV signals to U.S. homes.h

Insomnia sufferers in England could have greater access to successful treatment, thanks to a training programme developed as part of trials of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Insomnia (CBTi), funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).

In Britain, people report having insomnia more often than any other psychological condition, including anxiety, depression and even pain, according to the Office of National Statistics. Yet the only treatment offered in most doctors' surgeries is a course of sleeping tablets.

"It is well known that sleeping pills can be addictive and their efficacy wears off over time," says Professor Kevin Morgan of Loughborough University who led the trials. "It is also known that CBTi can treat insomnia more effectively than drugs in the long term. However, until now major barriers to delivering CBTi have included a shortage of trained therapists and the absence of an appropriate clinical service through which to deliver treatments."

The trials proved that CBTi can benefit people with insomnia at any age. It can even be successful for sufferers with other chronic illnesses, as well as those who are particularly prone to insomnia. The most unexpected outcome of the research is the success of the CBTi training which was developed, initially, to enable participants to take part in the project. Since the end of the trials, Professor Morgan's group have delivered training for therapists in Health Authorities all over the country. "Every Parkinson's disease nurse in Scotland has been trained in CBTi and new courses are planned for Oxford and South Yorkshire", Professor Morgan says.

"You see, we had this accumulated wisdom on delivering CBTi as part of our trials. Now, by rolling out this training programme for regional Health Authorities, we have effectively overcome one of the chief barriers to giving CBTi for insomnia: the lack of skills in the workforce."

"CBTi is not a difficult concept", Professor Morgan points out. "It is a question of encouraging insomnia sufferers to think about their sleep in a different way and to change the habits that bring about their sleep problems".

The trials involved delivering the principles of cognitive behavioural management for insomnia, in a structured programme of 'self-help'. Patients were given six weekly booklets that explained how sleep works and how to gain control of it. They were given access to a helpline, staffed by 'expert patients' who were themselves insomnia sufferers.

Professor Morgan states, "The booklets teach us how to 'retrust' the bedroom and relearn how to link it with sleep. In the same way that we do with food, for example thinking about entering a restaurant can trigger your mouth to water and anticipate food, so, entering your bedroom should bring on a desire to sleep".

"It is a question of giving people the tools to break the vicious circle," Professor Morgan says. "Most sufferers have never considered that they can do anything about their insomnia. But now, with the possibility of training therapists to deliver self-help CBTi from doctors' surgeries that is set to change."

    NOTES FOR EDITORS

    1. This release is based on findings and outcomes of a large interdisciplinary project 'Optimising Quality of Sleep Among Older People in the Community and Care Homes: An integrated approach,' which was funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and carried out by the University of Surrey (Professor Sara Arber, Professor Debra Skene & Dr Ingrid Eyers), the University of Bath (Professor Roger Orpwood), King's College London (Professor David Armstrong) and Loughborough University (Professor Kevin Morgan).

    2. The trial that was part of this project evaluated the effectiveness of a self-help cognitive behavioral intervention to improve sleep quality among older adults reporting insomnia symptoms associated with chronic disease. Self-help participants received six consecutive booklets, at weekly intervals, providing structured advice on key components of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBTi including self-monitoring, sleep restriction, stimulus control procedures and cognitive strategies), plus access to a telephone helpline. Control group participants received a single sheet of advice, detailing standard sleep hygiene measures. The primary outcome was sleep quality, measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Secondary outcomes were the Insomnia Severity Index, the subjective sleep efficiency index, and the Fatigue Severity Scale.

    3. The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) is the UK's largest organisation for funding research on economic and social issues. It supports independent, high quality research which has an impact on business, the public sector and the third sector. The ESRC's total budget for 2012/13 is 205 million. At any one time the ESRC supports over 4,000 researchers and postgraduate students in academic institutions and independent research institutes. More at www.esrc.ac.uk
