LEARNING TO LIVE FREE: Peace

Longtime readers of this blog will remember past discussions of?S?mi?heritage, including this old post?from 2006, in which I quote Ruthann Cecil as saying that a family history of Laestadianism is the surest indicator of?S?mi?roots. After all, Laestadius was half-S?mi, and?the movement began in Swedish Lapland, where the OALC still gets direction from "the elders."

I was dimly aware that I was related to some of those elders, who would visit the United States every few years and even come over for dinner (when I was a girl, I asked them for autographs as if they were rock stars! Which I suppose they are in that sphere).?

However, whenever I suggested to my family that we had?S?mi?roots (in addition to Swedish and Finnish), the concept was dismissed.?I was told I was "silly" and that my imagination was "overactive." But the more I looked into our family tree, the more persuaded I became. A cousin who had done some genealogy shared my convictions.

Last January, after seeing this Norwegian?movie, I submitted a saliva sample to FamilyTreeDNA.com. Some of my relatives were less than enthuastic.

"Does she WANT to be a Lapp?," said one. As if it were a bad thing. (For my family, "S?mi" is a newfangled and unfamiliar word.?I have zero hopes of them adopting it.)

"We can't be Lapp. I have no affinity for the cold," said another. That made me laugh.

Accustomed to such nonsense, I was curious about whether some of my family's quirks -- the frequent moves and name changes and distrust of outsiders -- could be explained, in part, by our ancestry. As Cecil and others have suggested, wasn't Laestadianism itself forged out of the pain and yearning of a disenfranchised minority forced to adapt to new places, languages, cultures? But I was wary of confirmation bias, like all the Americans who find an Indian princess in their ancestry (my husband's family is supposedly related to Pocahontas).?

A couple of months later the DNA results arrived. They were confusing at best, but I found that I had many genetic cousins with "S?mi"?indicators. Combined with traditional sleuthing done by a genealogist friend, all signs pointed to?S?mi?roots. Not through one grandparent, not through two, but through THREE, and possibly all four.

Okay, good enough.

I shared the news with my family.?

"Of course we're Lapp," sighed the relative who had denied it just a month prior. (This is what is known in psychological and cinematic circles as gaslighting. It can drive you crazy!)

Then the stories began to trickle out, like honey decrystallized on the stove. Stories I had never heard before.?Not surprisingly, they contained pain and shame . . . and I began to see why they were left behind in the Old Country. This "sudden remembering" is a common phenomenon among?S?mi?descendants, captured eloquently by the scholar Ellen Marie Jensen in her book, "We Stopped Forgetting, Stories from?S?mi?Americans." (Note: Ellen is on tour! Check out her appearances.)

Excited by this confirmation, I began poring over the literature I had collected on the?S?mi. I opened old books and ordered new ones. I began corresponding with DNA-matches in Sweden, distant cousins who were eager to identify a common relative. I learned that 100 percent of my deep ancestry is from the area now known as Finland (despite generations living in Sweden), that my haplogroup is H, and that I need a PhD in genetics to make sense of the rest.

In communication with the organizers online, I signed up to attend the 2012?S?mi-American Siiddastallan in Minneapolis in June, eager to meet many of my Facebook friends, including the great-great-great granddaughter of Lars Levi Laestadius. I was asked (perhaps due to this blog?) to facilitate a forum on?S?mi-American spirituality that would include panelists of various philosophies. Of course I jumped at the chance! What a wonderful opportunity to learn about others' journeys, and to share my own.?

But I was also apprehensive. Would there be a spirit of inquiry or of dogmatism? Would I find respect or suspicion? Would current Laestadians take offense at my having left their faith? Would the neopagans find me woefully uninformed?

I was welcomed warmly in Minneapolis, first at the airport by a lovely woman who fed me lunch and drove me to see my childhood home in Bloomington, then by a group involved with event planning. Over the next few days, I would make many new friends, each with a unique understanding of his or her?S?mi?heritage. We ate like royalty (healthy, fresh food prepared on site) and enjoyed walking and talking in the beautiful woods of Camp Salie. We soaked up?S?mi-related crafts, movies, stories, and an intriguting session on the relationship between the Basques and the?S?mi.?

A highlight of the event was a Skype session with young Forest?S?mi?in Finland. Their excitement at discovering a relative in our audience was incredibly moving. It felt as if we were on a new frontier, discovering -- via satellite -- new ways of building community.

Richard and Anne Tormanen's session on Laestadius' history and geneology was ?informative and interesting. I don't know of ?an easy way to upload their slideshow, which they generously shared with attendees, but if you join?S?mi Siida of North America's?Facebook page, it is available under "Files." It should be required viewing for all Laestadians and communities that include Laestadians, and I hope it finds a wide audience.

For the spirituality session, I had prepared two pages of discussion topics, but we barely scratched the surface. On the panel were a Laestadian (ALC), a pagan, an animist, and an evangelical Christian. They took turns talking about how their?S?mi?heritage informed their current spiritual practice. It was a lively and respectful discussion and provided ample evidence of the syncretism of ideologies. While there may be the temptation in some circles to claim a pure lineage (whether it is "Firstborn" Laestadianism or?S?mi?shamanism), there is no "authentic?S?mi?identity" anymore than there is an authentic Christian or Buddhist or Muslim or Laestadian identity. We all borrow from our ancestors and neighbors, and adapt to our current environment.?

That said, there is a lot of value in exploring what we do know about our?S?mi?past: e.g. the values around respect for nature, elders, and sharing of resources. And there are many important discussions to be had around generational trauma and healing.

As I looked around the table at these gentle people, I had a profound sensation of belonging. Belonging in a deep way, based on something integral, like the rings of a tree. Having left my birth community so many years ago, I didn't expect to feel that sensation, and it wasn't uniformly positive. It came with a sense of responsibility.

Perhaps that is what prompted me to talk about the history of divisions in my peculiar?S?mi?heritage, and how I felt it necessary, for my own health as well as the planet's, to promote the values of diversity and cooperation. I was aware that the SSNA community had been plagued by disputes about ownership. I was familiar with that zeitgeist (aren't all Laestadians?) and hoped the organization could resist a binary approach. Forcing alliances forces schisms.

I remarked that I had grown up hearing a greeting of "Jumalan rauhaa" (God's peace)?given only to others "of like mind," despite the core teaching that love should be extended to all. So acknowledging the irony of an?agnostic quasi-Buddhist cultural Christian giving a blessing,?I closed the session with?"Jumalan?rauhaa." (Afterward, a man who grew up Laestadian thanked me for returning the words to their original meaning. I was happy he understood.)

There is much more to tell about my recent adventures, but my family is begging me to join them on this sunny Saturday. Until next time: Namaste. Pace. Peace. Jumalan rauhaa!

Do you feel a responsibility to "spread peace" in your daily life? If so, how do you do that? I look forward to learning from you.

Myopic Olympic archer who aims at a 'blob of yellow' breaks record

LONDON (Reuters) - South Korea's Im Dong-hyun broke his own 72-arrow world record in the archery ranking round for the London Olympics with a score of 699 on Friday.

Im and his South Korean team mates, Kim Bub-min and Oh Jin-hyek, also broke the team world record for 72 arrows with a score of 2,087 at Lord's Cricket Ground.

Im, who won team gold at the 2008 and 2004 Games, lost his world number one ranking to American Brady Ellison in 2011 but has been in sensational form in the lead-up to the London Games, winning the test event at Lord's late last year and setting the previous record of 696 in Turkey in May.

The Korean, who suffers from strong myopia and just aims at a "blob of yellow color" in the center of the target 70 meters away, was happy to be at the top of the ranking round but was not about to get carried away.

"It's just the first round so I won't get too excited about it," he said.

Im will face 64th ranked archer Emanuele Guidi of San Marino in the first round. Guidi scored 110 points less than Im.

Im's team mate Kim would also have broke the record after shooting 698, while the third member of the team Oh finished with 690.

South Korean head coach Jang Young-sool was delighted his team had shot so well in the ranking round and said the damp drizzly conditions had not been a problem.

"It was good weather to shoot," he told Reuters. "A world record gives us confidence for the rest of the competition."

Despite winning the last three team gold medals, South Korea's men have yet to win the individual title.

Police: Cal Ripken's mom abducted, now safe

ABERDEEN, Md. (AP) ? Cal Ripken Jr.'s 74-year-old mother was found with her hands bound in the back seat of her car Wednesday after being kidnapped at gunpoint a day earlier at her home outside Baltimore and driven around blindfolded by her abductor, police and neighbors said.

Investigators do not know the kidnapper's motive and there was no ransom demand for Vi Ripken's release, Aberdeen Police Chief Henry Trabert said at a news conference.

The gunman forced Ripken into her silver Lincoln Continental between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. Tuesday, police said. She was found unharmed but shaken about 6:15 a.m. Wednesday near her home in Aberdeen, about 30 miles northeast of Baltimore.

When asked if police believe the kidnapper knew who he was abducting, Trabert did not answer, saying police don't know the motive or if the suspect any ties to the Ripken family.

"This case is still brand new," Trabert said.

Hall of Fame infielder Cal Ripken Jr. earned the nickname "Iron Man" for playing in 2,632 consecutive games during his 21-year career with the Baltimore before voluntarily ending the streak in 1998.

Next-door neighbor Gus Kowalewski said he spoke with Vi Ripken later Wednesday morning. The 72-year-old retired autoworker said Ripken told him the gunman tied her hands and put a blindfold on her, but said he wouldn't hurt her.

"He lit cigarettes for her, they stopped for food," Kowalewski said. "He said, 'I'm not going to hurt you. I'm going to take you back,' and that's what he did."

Kowalewski said Ripken told him the gunman originally planned to put tape over her eyes.

"But he didn't do that because she said 'please don't do that 'cause I'm claustrophobic,'" he said.

Instead, the gunman put some type of mask or blinders on her, and she could see somewhat out the sides, he said.

Investigators determined that Ripken was missing Tuesday night after talking to another police department.

"This has been a very trying time for our family, but we are grateful and relieved that mom is back with us, safe and healthy," the Ripken family said in a statement. "We want to thank everyone for their tremendous support, especially all of the law enforcement agencies that worked so hard and quickly."

Cal Ripken retired in 2001. His brother, Bill, played second base in the major leagues. The two were managed for a time on the Orioles by their father and Vi Ripken's husband, Cal Ripken Sr., who died in 1999.

Ten Signs Your Roof Needs Repair or Replacement

Roofs protect homes and commercial buildings from rain, snow and wind. They are an essential component of a building, and there are a few signs that make it easy to see if repairs are required. The particular type of structure often determines the roofing material. Residential buildings are usually covered with asphalt shingles. These are designed for decades of reliable service. Shingles should last for at least 20 years. Symptoms of leaks are visible on the exterior and interior of a home. Locating the problem may require professional assistance, but most homeowners can easily solve minor issues.

Stains and Discolorations One of the first signs of roof trouble is stains and discolorations. These may be found on the entire home or only in portions. The stains can be any color, but they are usually darker than the original roof. Stains can be a sign of several things but are often caused by mold or algae. The algae will slowly eat at the granules on the roof and should be removed. Products are designed for homeowners to use and easily attach to the end of a garden hose. Spraying the roof applies the product and kills the algae. This should remove the problem, but multiple treatments may be necessary.

Curling Shingles Curling shingles are easily seen from the ground, especially on a steep roof. The bottom edges of each shingle course will slowly curl up, and there may be a bubble under the shingle. This is a sign that the entire roof should be replaced. Over time, the UV rays from the sun damage shingles, and the life expectancy is about 20 years. Some products are designed for longer, and many companies make materials that are good for 40 years.

Interior Stains and Mold Leaks can be found in the home too. Leaks will usually cause discolorations on ceilings and walls and are most common around chimneys or bathroom fixtures. Skylights may also leak, and condensation is another big problem with these products. If a homeowner sees any signs of discolorations, they should call a professional roofing contractor. Often, minor damages will quickly compound and lead to huge repair bills. Addressing the problem early is the proactive way to limit expenses.

Attic Space Attic space can also be a great place to look for leaks. Checking after high wind storms and heavy rain is the best way to find any problems. Many people rely on a flashlight to help them see in their attic. Starting at the ridge line, the flashlight beams can be played over the plywood, and special attention should focus on the rafters. Water will usually follow the rafters, and it is visible along the top sides of lumber.

Roofing keeps homes dry, and there are several signs of trouble. Some issues are easily repaired, and minor leaks and wind-blown shingles can be replaced by professionals or homeowners. Serious signs of damage may require a new roof, and curling shingles are an omen that usually shows roofs have reached their life expectancy.

Staying Healthy With Natural Health Care

With the growing number of medical issues surrounding the current health care system, people are becoming increasingly frustrated with treatment results and the expense of maintaining personal health. Are you concerned about or wondering if it's possible to naturally treat health issues without killing yourself? A growing number of people are turning to alternative medicine and natural health care and doing so very successfully. Natural, everyday, common sense methods of preventing illness and maintaining optimal health do exist.
What does your body need to maintain proper health?
This is a question that continues to be asked, why, I don't know, because there are no hidden secrets about this. In fact I'm sure you probably already know the answer.
o Proper diet
It is known that many health problems (heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke and others) are exasperated by improper and poor diets. We live in a fast paced world driven by extreme commercialism that bombards us with images of super sized hamburgers, fries and extra large sodas. Many of our foods come in boxes loaded with artificial ingredients and real, un-natural, man-made chemicals to help us exist in our fast paced life. The first thing we need to do in maintaining our health is to get back to a healthy natural food based diet.
o Moderate exercise
Sitting on the couch watching TV or driving the car to the mailbox is not moderate exercise. Walking, bicycling, swimming, tennis, hiking, gymnastics, dancing and weight training are forms of exercise that we need in our daily lives. Achieving 30 minutes of some form of cardiovascular activity several times a week has a huge payback in maintenance of health, appearance, and well being.
o Excess avoidance (drugs, alcohol, fast food, smoking)
There is no mistake that excessive use of drugs, alcohol, fast food and smoking have a detrimental effect on health. If you are using any of these substances in excess you can expect to live a much shorter and unhealthier life. Even if you use these substances in moderation you may experience a shorter and unhealthier life.
o Good genetics
Now here's something you cannot control. We've all heard of the guy that smoked 2 packs of cigarettes' a day until he was 92 then got stepped on by an elephant while dancing with his 38 year old girl friend. There are those that are fortunate to be born to parents and grandparents that took care of their health. Then there are those that are born to parents/grandparents that did not enjoy healthy lifestyles. And let's face it; Mother Nature can be quite cruel at times as well. No matter what the case, your life and health can be improved by proper diet, exercise, and excess avoidance.
Other methods and forms of natural health care
While the things mentioned above are fundamentals of natural health care, there are other methods and forms of natural treatment and care that complement healthy living. We know that even healthy people are going to become ill with common ailments and diseases from time to time. However there are things that can be done to minimize the effects and duration of the inevitable cold, flu, pain, rash, and other common ailments or diseases that are sure to come from time to time.
Herbs and vitamins
Many natural herbs and vitamins can be obtained from health stores that strengthen our natural immunity to health issues. If you are experiencing a particular health issue, a trip to the health store should be considered, there will be a supplement that can help you overcome your health issue.
Holistic Medicine
Holistic medicine focuses on how the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual elements of the body are interconnected to maintain wellness (holistic health). When one part of the body or mind is not working properly, it is believed to affect the whole person. Holistic approaches focus on the whole person rather than just on the illness or part of the body that is not healthy. There are many holistic practitioners available to help you with your health and well being.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a treatment based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a system of healing that dates back thousands of years. At the core of TCM is the notion that a type of life force, or energy, known as qi (pronounced "chee") flows through energy pathways (meridians) in the body. Each meridian corresponds to one organ, or group of organs, that governs particular bodily functions. Achieving the proper flow of qi is thought to create health and wellness. Many ailments and health problems are treated with acupuncture by inserting a set of tiny needles at points along the meridians.
For those that cannot tolerate the thought of needles poking their skin, there is a form of needless acupuncture available. Check out the resource box below to get more information.
Acupressure
Acupressure is often called acupuncture without the needles. Instead of needles, acupressure involves the application of manual pressure (usually with the fingertips) to specific points on the body. Acupressure is typically used for:
  • Nausea and vomiting during pregnancy/ morning sickness
  • Motion sickness
  • Nausea after surgery
  • Nausea due to chemotherapy
  • Cancer-related fatigue
  • Headache
  • Menstrual cramps
  • Muscle tension and pain

Magnetic Health CareMagnetics have been around for several hundred years and has found a place in natural health care. There are many products available using static magnetic fields that offer relief of pain and reduction or elimination of many health ailments. One of the most common type of magnetic health care products is the magnetic bracelet. There are other products that emit electromagnetic pulses that have greater potential of providing natural health care treatment than products offering a single static magnetic field.
Chiropractic Health care
Believe it or not Chiropractic health care is a form of natural alternative health care. Chiropractic health care is based upon the fact that all organ, tissue, and gland functions are controlled via nervous system input starting from signals in the brain cascading downward via the spinal cord and peripheral nerves. On some occasions, the spinal bones (vertebra) which protectively surround the spinal cord can misalign or subluxate creating increased pressure upon the nerve roots that pass between the vertebrae. This increased pressure strangles or pinches the nerve roots, thus decreasing the impulses to the end organs. Prolonged pressure upon these nerves causes disease states to develop, whether it be muscular or internal. Spinal adjustments are high speed, low force procedures that restore the spinal bones into their correct alignment, thus relieving stress upon the spinal nerves. Once the stress has been relieved upon the nerves, the body can naturally be restored to 100% of its healing capacity.
There has been a real shift in the way people think about their health. Rising health care costs as well as inherent risks that come with medical treatments and pharmaceutical drugs is becoming a legitimate concern. You can take charge and responsibility of your own health care and live a long and healthy life. Of course there will be times when a doctor is needed for your health care, but with self administered natural health care those times can be minimized. To your health!

    Funerals: Touching is Safe Here

In our culture, touch is too often motivated by

    1.) ?Desire. 2.) ?Demand.

Many don?t know how to touch outside of those two categories.

There?s a rather new interdisciplinary area of study called haptonomy which explores how to touch outside of the desire and demand categories. ?Haptonomy is the study of psycho-tactile communication. Psychologist and hospice pioneer Marie de Hennezel writes concerning her training in?haptonomy:

One develops and tries to ripen one?s human faculties of contact; one learns to ?dare? to encounter another human being by touch. ?It may seem foolish to undergo formal training in order to develop a basic human faculty. ?Unfortunately, the world in which we all grew up and continue to develop is one that doesn?t encourage spontaneous emotional contact. ?Certainly we touch other people, but that?s when the intention is erotic. Other times, the context is impersonalizing, as in the medical sphere, when one is most often manipulating ?bodily objects.? ?What is forgotten is what the whole person may feel. ?

Soldiers at a funeral for 13 of their fallen comrades.

There?s touching with desire, touching with demand and ? here?s a third option ? there?s touching with devotion. Touching with devotion is an ardent recognition of the value of people ? it?s not forceful or uncomfortable, rather it?s respectful and produces ease.

There?s one place where the humanizing, respectful and relaxing touch of devotion is seen on a regular basis.

    That place is death.

We receive the phone call that so-and-so has died at their home. ?We put on our dress cloth, drive to the house and there awaiting us is so-and-so?s family. ?We walk in and instead of shaking their hands, we reach for a hug. ?And they reach back.

    Complete strangers.

At the funeral of so-and-so, family and friends hug and kiss and embrace all day. ?It?s those hugs and embraces that somehow make a funeral bearable ? they somehow relax the otherwise?tumultuous?experience of death.

The irony is that a human has to die for true humanity to be found.

    *****

Mainstream medicine is catching on to the power of devotional touch.

The University of Miami conducted over 100 studies on the power of devotional touch and this is what they found: Devotional touch can: produce faster growth in premature babies

caused reduced pain in children and adults

    decrease autoimmune disease symptoms

lowered glucose levels in children with diabetes

improved immune systems in people with cancer.

Other studies have show that devotional touch can

    lower stress levels

    boost immune systems

    help migraines.

Why do we reserve the life giving power of touch only for death and funerals?

What would happen if we would daily interact with our friends and family like we were at a funeral?

Interest in DNA testing for genealogy has reached an all-time high thanks to its increasing sophistication and the resulting visibility in the media. We hear about what we can learn from DNA testing from popular genealogy television programs, news stories and in advertising.? As a result, many family history enthusiasts have expressed their desire to venture into the fascinating world of genetic genealogy, but don?t know where to start.? If you are one of these people, then I am writing this for you. In a series of four posts over the next month, I will explain the three different types of DNA testing currently used by genealogists to discover more about their family trees. I will endeavor to help you determine which test or combination of tests would be best suited to your interests.

The first step is to determine your testing goals.? Do you have a general curiosity about genetic genealogy or is your focus more specific? For example, please consider the following questions:

    • Are you primarily interested in researching your surname?
    • Are there specific brick walls that you wish to target with the use of DNA testing?
    • How far back in your family tree are these brick walls?
    • What is the ancestral pattern back to these brick walls, i.e.- mother?s mother?s ???mother or father?s mother?s mother?s father?
    • Are you ready for a long-term project or do you desire quick answers?
    • Are there adoptions in your family tree that you would like to explore?
    • Is your primary interest receiving a percentage breakdown of your overall ancestral origins or ?ethnicity??

Currently, there are tests geared at isolating three different types of DNA that can address these questions and others. They are Y chromosome DNA (Y-DNA), mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and autosomal DNA (atDNA).? Y-DNA has been in use the longest and, as a result, has the best track record for helping genealogists demolish those proverbial brick walls, so let?s talk about that one first.

    Focused on your surname?

Y-DNA refers to the DNA found on the Y chromosome. Only males inherit the Y chromosome, so this test can only be used to trace the direct paternal line.? Simply speaking, a man inherits his Y chromosome from his father who inherited it from his father who inherited it from his father and so on. Testing of Y-DNA can reveal the ancient origins of a person?s direct paternal line. It can also be of great genealogical value since the Y-DNA traditionally follows the same inheritance pattern as surnames. As the surname is passed down from father to son, so is the Y-DNA. Because of this, a male can often identify which direct paternal ancestral line he belongs to by matching with others of the same or similar surnames. For those with ancestral roots in societies with traditional surname inheritance, this type of testing can sometimes help identify common ancestors from several hundred years ago. Though far from guaranteed, an adoptee may even find success in discovering his biological surname by testing his Y-DNA.

If you are a woman who is interested in discovering more about your maiden surname, then you will need to locate a male of that surname from your family. You can test, for example, your father or brother (full or paternal half), a paternal uncle or a paternal male first cousin. If needed, you can even test a more distant cousin as long as he carries the surname of interest and shares a common ancestor along your direct paternal line.? Remember, you cannot test your son for this purpose, since he carries the Y-DNA of his father!

Although this test is limited in scope, it can be used in ways not immediately obvious. For instance, you can identify any specific surname of interest in your family tree, follow that surname down the branches toward present day and use these same rules to try to locate an appropriate male for testing.? This way, the usefulness of Y-DNA testing in your family research can be expanded beyond this one ancestral line.

Perhaps the best news about Y-DNA testing is that there are thousands of surname-specific DNA projects headed by volunteer genetic genealogists to help you with your DNA research. With the birth of the first commercial genealogy DNA testing company, Family Tree DNA, in 2000, surname projects immediately began springing up. Some have already had great success in determining the origin(s) and family branching of their particular surname of focus, while others are still searching for enough participants to reach solid conclusions.? You can participate and assist in focused research on your surname by joining the appropriate project. To locate your surname project, you can try Googling? ?(Insert surname) + DNA Project?. If you find that one does not exist, you may want to consider starting your own and recruiting those genealogical cousins that many of us are already in contact with through our family history research.

As in all genealogy, I do want to point out that immediate gratification is not guaranteed. Some participants have not yet found success with this type of testing due to the lack of matches to their DNA in the databases. However, time should rectify this problem for most with the growing popularity of testing and the increasing numbers of those contributing their DNA to this research. For cultures that did not utilize inherited surnames in the traditional way, Y-DNA testing will not be as effective, but can still be useful in identifying probable origins and migration patterns.

The Y-DNA tests on the market currently offer anywhere from 12 markers to over 100 markers. I suggest testing at least 37 markers to start with (around $150). In the simplest of terms, ?markers? are specific spots on the Y chromosome for which numerical values are assigned based on each individual?s DNA signature. So, for example, if you order a 37 marker Y-DNA test, this means you will generally receive a string of 37 numerical values. A man?s closest matches may be found by comparing his string of numbers to all of the other results in the company?s DNA database.? As a general rule, the men who have the most markers that match each other are the most closely related to each other.? The approximate number of generations back in time that two men shared a common paternal ancestor is estimated by determining how closely the individual strings of numbers match each other.? (Don?t worry; the testing company will automate these calculations for you.)

Since this test exclusively addresses your direct paternal line, remember the results are only informative of a very small portion of your family tree. If you are interested in a more general overview of your ancestry, please check back for my post in two weeks on autosomal DNA tests.

Next week, we will take a look at mitochondrial DNA testing.
