Virgin Mobile is a wireless communications brand used by eight independent brand-licensees worldwide. Virgin Mobile branded wireless communications services are currently available in Australia, Canada, Chile, France, India, Poland, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Virgin Mobile branded services were formerly offered in Singapore and Qatar.

Each Virgin Mobile branded entity acts independently from the others, thus the handsets, service plans and network radio interfaces vary from country to country. In a given country, the Virgin Mobile wireless entity is typically a partnership between Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group and an existing mobile network operator or mobile virtual network operator.

Current brand licensees

Virgin Mobile Australia

Virgin Mobile Australia (VMA) is a telecommunications company based in Sydney, Australia. They sell through over 3500 retail outlets, including flagship stores in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, as well as via telesales and web-based stores.

In Australia, Virgin Mobile operates on the Optus network.

Virgin Mobile Canada

Virgin Mobile Canada experienced substantial growth in 2008, launching approximately 60 'Virgin Mini Stores' (VMS) across the country. VMS are kiosks usually located in shopping malls that especially target the 18?35 year old demographic. For four years running, Virgin Mobile Canada has received J.D. Power and Associates' annual award for Highest Customer Satisfaction for Prepaid Wireless. Post-paid plans were introduced to Virgin Canada in February 2008.

Bell Mobility acquired Virgin Mobile Canada in May 2009 for CAN$142 million. Since early 2010, Virgin Mobile Canada launched the iPhone 3G, 3GS and 4 post-paid service in Virgin Mobile Retail Stores and online, all around Canada. Virgin Mobile became the fifth brand offering the iPhone in Canada, after Fido, Rogers Wireless, Telus and Bell Mobility.

In conjunction with the launch of the third-generation iPad, Bell Mobility will allow Virgin Mobile Canada customers to access its LTE network.

Virgin Mobile Chile

Virgin Mobile Latin America (VMLA) launched operations in Chile in April 2012, having received regulatory approval from Chile?s telecommunications regulator as well as signing an agreement with Movistar, one of the country?s leading mobile network operators. VMLA announced in June of this year its plan to become Latin America?s leading mobile virtual network operator (MVNO). Since then, the company has made significant progress towards its goal of beginning commercial operations in many countries. Chile will be its first commercial operation in early 2012. Richard Branson commented: "We are excited to have made such good progress towards launching our first mobile business in Latin America in Chile."This is an exciting project for Virgin and we believe Virgin Mobile Chile customers will be delighted by the services we will be offering them at launch." ?We are very appreciative of Subtel?s (Chile?s Subsecretar?a de Telecomunicaciones) prompt approval of our application," said VMLA?s chairman Phil Wallace.

Virgin Mobile France

Virgin Mobile France is the French division of Virgin Mobile. It is a mobile virtual network operator, and a subsidiary of Virgin Group.

Launched in France on 3 April 2006, Virgin Mobile is the fourth mobile operator on the French market with over 2 million customers. Chaired by Geoffroy Roux de B?zieux, Virgin Mobile is commercialized by OMEA TELECOM, a joint venture between Virgin Group and Carphone Warehouse.

It is known to be the first operator to have launched a plan with unlimited SMS in France.

Virgin Mobile India

On 1 March 2011, Virgin launched the Mobile brand in India through a franchise arrangement with NTT DoCoMo. This is Virgin?s seventh launch globally and its largest. However on 29 March 2008, the Department of Telecom (DoT) cleared the deal after clarification from Tata Teleservices indicated that Virgin had not entered India as an MVNO.

Virgin Mobile South Africa

Virgin Mobile South Africa (VMSA) is a joint-venture between Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group and Cell C. Virgin Mobile South Africa launched in 2006. In February 2011 it was reported that Cell C's 50% stake in Virgin Mobile is to be sold to Virgin Group of the UK and Calico Investments of the Bahamas.

Virgin Mobile UK

Virgin Mobile UK is a mobile phone service provider operating in the United Kingdom. The company was the world's first Mobile Virtual Network Operator, launched in 1999. Being a virtual operator, Virgin Mobile does not maintain its own network, and instead has contracts to use the existing network of Everything Everywhere. Virgin Mobile was bought by NTL:Telewest on 4 April 2006 before joining the quadplay of Virgin Media services when NTL:Telewest rebranded into Virgin Media on 9 February 2007, with a new logo in-line with Virgin Media.

Initially, Virgin Mobile in the UK used the network coverage of Mobile Operator T-Mobile and have been doing so since their establishment, however, following the merger of T-Mobile and Orange UK to form the brand "Everything Everywhere" in Britain, customers could begin to take advantage of Orange's broadcasting signals in addition to those of T-Mobile from Autumn 2011.

Virgin Mobile USA

Virgin Mobile USA, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sprint Nextel. Founded in 2001 as joint venture between the Virgin Group and Sprint Corporation, Virgin Mobile USA began offering service as a mobile virtual network operator in 2002 via the Sprint CDMA 1900 MHz PCS digital network. On 28 July 2009, Sprint agreed to pay US$483 million to the Virgin Group for the portion of Virgin Mobile USA, LLC that Sprint did not already own.

There is no roaming to other networks in the United States.

In June 2009 Virgin Mobile announced and started a pay-as-you go mobile data program called Broadband2Go in the United States, using Novatel Wireless hardware, and available exclusively through the Best Buy chain of stores originally, but now available at other retailers including RadioShack in the United States. It uses a small USB modem for internet connectivity.

Former brand licensees

Virgin Mobile Qatar

Virgin Mobile Qatar was a brand licensing partnership agreement between Virgin Group and Qatar Telecom (as Qtel Group). The new brand was launched 13 May 2010 over the network of Qatar Telecom (Qtel). Virgin claims to be Qatar?s first youth-oriented mobile brand, and offers pre-paid-only, simplified all-day tariff plans (with no distinction between peak and off-peak), with a 180-day airtime validity ? which it says is the longest available in the country. Local calls are charged at QAR0.55 (USD0.15) per minute for the first five minutes used in each day, and QAR0.30 per minute after that, whilst mobile internet access costs QAR1 per 1MB. Richard Branson, chairman of UK-based Virgin Group, said: "Virgin Mobile [has] more than 15 million customers around the world ... I am proud to have partnered with Qtel to make Virgin Mobile Qatar our first mobile launch in the Middle East." The service is the eighth Virgin Mobile branded operation in the world, following on from launches in the UK, Australia, the US, Canada, France, South Africa and India. Branson added that Virgin Group is mulling further partnerships with Qtel, which has a group presence in 17 countries.

Virgin Mobile Qatar was being widely mistaken to be the third mobile network operator (MNO) in Qatar, in the form of a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), essentially a brand as reseller. It has been confirmed by the Qtel and ictQatar, the local telecommunications authority reiterating that its only a branding agreement.

This service has since closed due to a dispute with Vodafone. Customers will have ample opportunity to obtain their replacement SIM cards or seek a refund. Qtel will communicate full details of the migration programme and customer refund options to all of their QVMS customers and provide them with reminders before finally de-activating any remaining active Virgin Mobile branded SIM cards between the 1st and the 3rd of August 2011.

Virgin Mobile Singapore

Virgin Singapore was launched in October 2001 as a joint venture with Singtel. The operations were closed down by October 2002 after failing to attract a significant number of customers.

Failure of the joint venture was attributed to a saturated mobile market and Virgin Mobile's positioning as a "premium" brand.

Scientists discover that shape matters in DNA nanoparticle therapy

    Saturday, October 13, 2012
This illustration depicts DNA molecules (light green), packaged into nanoparticles by using a polymer with two different segments. One segment (teal) carries a positive charge that binds it to the DNA, and the other (brown) forms a protective coating on the particle surface. By adjusting the solvent surrounding these molecules, the Johns Hopkins and Northwestern researchers were able to control the shape of the nanoparticles. The team?s animal tests showed that a nanoparticle?s shape could dramatically affect how effectively it delivers gene therapy to the cells. The cartoon images in the foreground, obtained though computational modeling, matched closely with the gray background images, which were collected through transmission electron microscopy. Credit: Credits: Wei Qu, Northwestern University, simulation cartoons; Xuan Jiang, Johns Hopkins University, microscopic images

Researchers from Johns Hopkins and Northwestern universities have discovered how to control the shape of nanoparticles that move DNA through the body and have shown that the shapes of these carriers may make a big difference in how well they work in treating cancer and other diseases.

This study, to be published in the Oct. 12 online edition of the journal Advanced Materials, is also noteworthy because this gene therapy technique does not use a virus to carry DNA into cells. Some gene therapy efforts that rely on viruses have posed health risks.

"These nanoparticles could become a safer and more effective delivery vehicle for gene therapy, targeting genetic diseases, cancer and other illnesses that can be treated with gene medicine," said Hai-Quan Mao, an associate professor of materials science and engineering in Johns Hopkins' Whiting School of Engineering.

Mao, co-corresponding author of the Advanced Materials article, has been developing nonviral nanoparticles for gene therapy for a decade. His approach involves compressing healthy snippets of DNA within protective polymer coatings. The particles are designed to deliver their genetic payload only after they have moved through the bloodstream and entered the target cells. Within the cells, the polymer degrades and releases DNA. Using this DNA as a template, the cells can produce functional proteins that combat disease.

A major advance in this work is that Mao and his colleagues reported that they were able to "tune" these particles in three shapes, resembling rods, worms and spheres, which mimic the shapes and sizes of viral particles. "We could observe these shapes in the lab, but we did not fully understand why they assumed these shapes and how to control the process well," Mao said. These questions were important because the DNA delivery system he envisions may require specific, uniform shapes.

To solve this problem, Mao sought help about three years ago from colleagues at Northwestern. While Mao works in a traditional wet lab, the Northwestern researchers are experts in conducting similar experiments with powerful computer models.

Erik Luijten, associate professor of materials science and engineering and of applied mathematics at Northwestern's McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science and co-corresponding author of the paper, led the computational analysis of the findings to determine why the nanoparticles formed into different shapes.

"Our computer simulations and theoretical model have provided a mechanistic understanding, identifying what is responsible for this shape change," Luijten said. "We now can predict precisely how to choose the nanoparticle components if one wants to obtain a certain shape."

The use of computer models allowed Luijten's team to mimic traditional lab experiments at a far faster pace. These molecular dynamic simulations were performed on Quest, Northwestern's high-performance computing system. The computations were so complex that some of them required 96 computer processors working simultaneously for one month.

In their paper, the researchers also wanted to show the importance of particle shapes in delivering gene therapy. Team members conducted animal tests, all using the same particle materials and the same DNA. The only difference was in the shape of the particles: rods, worms and spheres.

"The worm-shaped particles resulted in 1,600 times more gene expression in the liver cells than the other shapes," Mao said. "This means that producing nanoparticles in this particular shape could be the more efficient way to deliver gene therapy to these cells."

The particle shapes used in this research are formed by packaging the DNA with polymers and exposing them to various dilutions of an organic solvent. DNA's aversion to the solvent, with the help of the team's designed polymer, causes the nanoparticles to contract into a certain shape with a "shield" around the genetic material to protect it from being cleared by immune cells.

    Not a Martyr: 25 Stunning & Extraordinary Toddler-Wearing Photos ...

top3 1024x1024 Not a Martyr: Stunning & Extraordinary Toddlerwearing Images From Around The WorldAs we draw to a close on International Babywearing Week, I thought what better way to celebrate than to make a call out to all of our awesome readers and fellow Babble bloggers who are active baby and toddler wearers?

I was going to make this a response?piece?to this silly little article that was written on The Stir, but the more submissions I received and quotes sent in and the conversations I had with the mamas who were sending their pictures in?well, I was?inspired and delighted. The annoyance of that silly little article sort of just melted away. These pictures and these stories, speak for themselves.

I?m pretty sure that our ancestors the world over who wore their children?they didn?t consider themselves martyrs. They were getting shit done and loving their kids. Not much more needs to be said. There?s enough heavy and heated debates going on betwixt mothers.

Let?s end the week by celebrating in all of the vast and incredible ways we choose to mother.

    Enjoy and Happy Toddlerwearing!

      Me & The Duchess

We travel A LOT with my partner frequently touring as a musician. There isn't (as in rarely if ever) always room for the stroller on top of the stand-up bass and our luggage and other gear. Aside from all of that? I ENJOY wearing my babies and toddlers. I can't do it all the time, as I have a bad back, but I do it when I can and when I want.

"Oh boy am I thankful for babywearing. I don?t exactly know how parenting two this close in age would be possible otherwise. I am so thankful I live in an age where quality and ergonomic carriers that don?t kill your back like the Ergo exist. I often have older women raise their brows and say to me ?Well. We didn?t have those in when I was having babies? and I normally smile and say something like ?Oh? because I am socially weird. But what I want to do is lean in and say 'HOW THE HELL DID YOU DO IT?!!??!'."

Adele loves to be worn, and at 20 months, I still wear her on a daily basis. Toddlers are busy little people, with an agenda all their own. I love that wearing Adele brings her back to mama for some time to reconnect and continue to strengthen the bond that has been building over the last 20 months. Dory & Porter

"I love the eye contact. When mine are so close to my chest, we can really do some serious bonding, just by being close enough to gaze into one another's eyes." That type of bonding through wearing your child in a sling doesn't need to stop just becasue they've reached toddler-hood. Toddlers still crave that warmth and touch that babies do.

    I was pleased, I was enthralled, I was thrilled, ? ? ? and then ? ? ? I ...

    October 12, 2012 ? Posted in Opinion?

    By?Hamilton R. Hanson

We the People, today?s patriots who came from the ?tea party? movement of 2009, have been finding, writing and speaking about the creeping loss of our freedoms:? the Patriot Act, REAL ID, NDAA and even Presidential Orders regarding new restrictions being placed on the law-abiding American citizen regarding freedom of movement and speech in our country.

As many gathered on the St. Petersburg waterfront to participate in the rally for Presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, it was a lovely day ? the worst rain storm in 20,000 years was predicted, and as usual, it never materialized.

From where we were, we could see the crowd grow ? the line (starting at Spa Beach) to get in to the event was halfway back to the Vinoy.

We had some 40 or so volunteers in and out of the sign waving activity at the corner of Bayshore Drive and 2nd St NE, the pier entrance.? Some went on into the event and were replaced by others, and some stayed through from 3:30 until the ?end?.

Lots of good interplay within our sign waving group, and also with those walking from ?downtown?, through us out to the event.? I was so pleased to see parents with their children of all ages ? one might have been 2 weeks and sound asleep.

Very few hecklers either from cars going by or from people in general or with signs.

After almost three hours of harassing the traffic cops assigned to block off the pier road, the word finally came ? one of the cops pointed to the flashing lights down by Al Lang Field.

    GAME ON!!!? Enthrallment!!

Some blackened window SUV?s first.? Then open windowed SUV?s that we perceived to be Secret Service.? Then the MAN himself (THRILL) standing in the ?well? of the closed door to the bus with Anne standing at the head of the stairs.

Then came something that made me truly gasp!!!

As little boys, there are few pleasures and thrills like a completed ?Hail Mary? to end the football game in the last seconds; the NASCAR or Indy car coming from #2 to win at the last minute by a squeak at the finish line; and playing with toy metal or plastic soldiers.

For those who served, there are unbelievable highs when we first fire live ammunition; and when we stand on the curb and watch Old Glory at the head of a military parade in celebration of our heritage; and unbelievable lows to watch a military procession for a fallen hero.

All of those feelings came to me all at once that afternoon when I saw with my own eyes.

Men in black military style uniforms driving by us peace and freedom loving individuals with windows open and what would have been commonly acknowledged as M-16 rifles, presumably fully loaded with live ammunition, being very visible and held AT THE READY!!!!!

You?ve all seen the Toyota pickup trucks used by ?insurgents? all over the Middle East for years, now.? Put that very same image on the streets of St. Petersburg, FL and see how you feel.

    That was my AGHAST moment.

Right here within our borders and in our own country and on the very streets we use in our daily lives are people now on a government payroll who are carrying military grade weapons ? which could be used at any moment to cut down ? WITHOUT WARNING ? the people standing peacefully on the roadside.

That scenario is EXACTLY what you all have been writing against for MONTHS!!

I was AGHAST once my shock subsided!!!!!

    Where do you stand????

Do you accept such behavior from our elected officials??? Are you content, on the basis of ?public safety? and the need to protect our Presidential candidates, to watch yet another freedom dissipate before your eyes??

In this now constant tug of war between the perceived need by our ?rulers? to maintain public safety, and the founding principle that America would be a place where citizens are free to roam at will, I am once again reminded of the sonnet commonly credited to Martin Niemoller and titled ?First they came? in which the last line is:? ?Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up.?

20 Million Russians, 6 Million Jews, 70 Million Chinese ? all peaceable humans now gone!

Our ONLY hope for the future of possibly all man-kind is to work ever harder to find, support and elect representatives at all levels of government who are more faithful to our independent and freedom loving heritage, our Judeo-Christian culture and the US Constitution, and less self-absorbed in the egotistical ability to tell, nay, force with military weaponry, other people how to live!!!!

Threat looms over Bali bombing 10th anniversary

BALI, Indonesia (AP) ? A decade after twin bombs destroyed a holiday in paradise for tourists partying at two jumping nightclubs near the beach in Bali, survivors and victims' families braved a fresh terrorism threat to remember those lost to the tragedy.

Security was tight Friday with more than 2,000 police and military, including snipers, deployed to guard the memorial service after reports involving the "certain movement" of terrorists were announced two days earlier.

The 2002 bombing was Asia's deadliest terror strike, killing 202 people ? including 88 Australians and seven Americans ? and injuring more than 240 on Indonesia's resort island. The attack, carried out by the al-Qaida-linked group Jemaah Islamiyah, started a wave of violence in the world's most-populous Muslim nation that hit an embassy, hotels and restaurants.

2012 Yavapai County Philanthropists of the Year Perry and Sandy Massie

    Perry and Sandy Massie

Over eight years? ago, Perry and Sandy Massie chose to make Prescott their home because it was a great place to live and raise their daughter, Georgia. That is saying a lot, since Perry?s position with the Outdoor Channel and Outdoor Channel Holdings Inc. and as host of the ?Prospecting America Show? meant that the family had traveled extensively.

In the relatively short time they have been Prescott residents, the Massie?s have had a significant impact. Perry is immediate past chair of the Board of Directors of Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Massie?s support the organization both financially and with their time and talents. The Massie?s have served as a family match for a young boy and daughter, Georgia, has been a school mentor.

Perry currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Yavapai College Foundation and is an active member of the fundraising committee and the resource enterprise committee. Sandy and Perry?s commitment to education has also benefited Tri-City College Prep School.

The Massie?s bring an excellent business acumen to the nonprofits they are engaged with, as well as, a sense of adventure coupled with compassion and generous spirits. Driven by a love for youth development and higher education, the couple has helped shape the future of many financially needy college students and at-risk youth in Yavapai County by providing critical support and mentoring.

    2012 Youth Philanthropist David Warren

Perry and Sandy Massie were nominated by Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Yavapai College Foundation. The couple is dedicating their $1,000 award to Yavapai CASA for Kids.

YOUTH PHILANTHROPIST OF THE YEAR AWARDS

    Kaileigh Koons

Kaileigh Koons has a breadth of leadership and community experiences that rivals community-oriented adults three times her age. Much of this is due to her family?s commitment and dedication to community service and her own sense of philanthropy and compassion for others.

Kaileigh is involved with Teens? Closet as a co-founder with her mother, Krystal. Teens? Closet provides free, new or like-new clothing and accessories to teens in need, in an effort to boost self-esteem and self-confidence. Within months of establishing the first closet at The Rock, a teen outreach center in Prescott, Teens? Closet outgrew that space.

    2012 Youth Philanthropist Emilia Stone

Last March, the operation moved into a 650-square-foot facility offered by a generous member of the community. The second Teens? Closet made it possible to separate clothing and shopping areas for the girls and guys. Currently, Teens? Closet serves 25 to 30 teens a month from the surrounding areas. School personnel, foster parents, churches, and community members refer teens to this resource. Under Kaileigh?s leadership, Teens? Closet intends to double the number of teens served by doubling the number of volunteers, increasing the inventory, recruiting youth volunteers to sort, organize and help with fundraising, and enlisting a grant writer for continued sustainability.

Kaileigh is continuing her community work with Teens? Closet and other organizations while working and attending college full-time. She was nominated by Shari Sterling of Prescott Unified School District. Kaileigh is dedicating her $300 award to Teens? Closet.

    Emelia Stone

As a volunteer at Prescott Creeks, Emelia (Mia) Stone has demonstrated a dedicated passion for the environment and making her community a better place. Mia can be counted on for annual clean-ups, building a parade float, volunteering to help show kids the Watson Wood Riparian Preserve, or making up-cycled jewelry as a fundraiser.

This year, Mia had the opportunity to go to Cambodia with her school to help people overseas. Her caring heart is felt by all who come into contact with her.

Mia regularly works with other Northpoint students on projects throughout the community. These projects are focused on the environment and helping to create social change.

Mia volunteers and helps the Yavapai Community Food Bank, Coalition for Compassion and Justice and Yavapai Big Brothers and Big Sisters.

Emelia was nominated by Tina Blake, a local nonprofit advocate. Mia is dedicating her $300 award to the Prescott Creeks Preservation Association.

    2012 Youth Philanthropist Kaileigh?Koons

    David Warren

David Warren participates in Service Learning class at Prescott Valley School with an excellent work ethic, a sense of compassion, and exceptional leadership.

In his senior year, as an Executive Director of the club, David supervised a wide range of community projects that improved the quality of life in Yavapai County. His supervised blood drives won the Platinum Award from United Blood Services and the club received the President?s Volunteer Service Award at the Gold level, as did David.

David?s supervised food drive for the Yavapai Food Bank exceeded all goals.

David led the club in the development of a project inspired by First Things First that it named Teen Parents: Reality Check. This well-researched presentation provides the realities of teenage pregnancy in an innovative, powerful, and extremely impacting way.

David Warren was nominated by Bill Suedmeyer of Prescott Valley School. David is dedicating his $300 award to the Prescott Valley School Youth Chamber.

    COMMUNITY BENEFACTOR AWARD

Cornucopia Community Advocates award accepted by Julie and Harv Grady

    Cornucopia Community Advocates

Cornucopia Community Advocates is an organization that raises community awareness about emerging problems, such as the rise of hunger in Yavapai County and assists numerous organizations and food banks with money, resources, mentoring and advocacy. Cornucopia contributes to the well-being and quality of life in the entire community by helping organizations that promote the arts, economic development, care for children, elders and the poor.

Cornucopia Community Advocates is considered a catalyst for networking among organizations with shared missions and purposes. It was nominated by Bishop William Gameson and Gardens for Humanity.

Cornucopia is dedicating its $1,000 award to the Verde Food Council.

    BUSINESS PHILANTHROPIST OF THE YEAR

    Arizona Public Service (APS)

APS gives back in the communities it serves throughout Arizona and in Yavapai County. The public utility sponsored the Granite Creek Cleanup earlier this year and the APS Foundation provided much needed financial support for West Yavapai Guidance Clinic, making it possible for AmeriCorps members to assist in its Senior Peer Program.

Jack Silvernale was honored by Yavapai County Community Foundation in recognition of his unselfish dedication at great personal sacrifice to provide for the needs of Prescott citizens

The Senior Peer Program is designed to provide resources for common senior difficulties with isolation, chronic health conditions, stress, loss of a spouse, and financial challenges. This service provides confidential support groups, one-on-one individualized support, educational presentations, and resources and referrals for those seeking specific information.

APS was nominated by the West Yavapai Guidance Clinic Foundation and is dedicating its $1,000 award to the Boys & Girls Club of Central Arizona.

    SPECIAL RECOGNITION

    Jack Silvernale

Jack Silvernale was known for his generosity. When he purchased the failing Prescott Whipple Stage in 1975, Jack spent his own money to operate the city bus service for citizens who had no other transportation alternative. He was determined to make it work even at great personal sacrifice.

Jack didn?t seek accolades or praise or any kind of reward. Quietly, without fanfare, he simply helped others. And Jack saw to it that, after his death, the city bus would continue to provide services to the people of Prescott.

Do Students Like Your Communication Style? | Faculty Focus

    October 12, 2012

By: Maryellen Weimer, PhD in Faculty Evaluation

Should instructors care whether or not students find their exchanges satisfying? They should, because as this research (and previous studies) document, those levels of satisfaction correlate positively and significantly with something these researchers call ?affective learning.? Affective learning involves student feelings and emotions toward the subject matter and the teacher.

When those feelings are positive, they impact levels of motivation and cognitive learning in direct and measurable ways. What?s being explored here empirically makes a lot of intuitive sense as well. Most of us have experienced first-hand the ?good vibes? generated when students in a class are reacting positively.

How are positive feelings about a course and instructor generated? Communication plays a central role. It matters what the instructor says in front of the whole class and in individual interactions?such was when students request information, ask about course content, exchange greetings, or ask a personal question.

As in other research reports, the instrument developed and used in these studies is included in the article referenced below. It contains 24 items in its long version and eight in a shorter version.

Here are some sample items from the instrument:

    • I usually feel positive about my conversations with my teacher.
    • My teacher makes an effort to satisfy question I have.
    • I feel comfortable talking with my teacher.
    • I wish my teacher was better at communicating with me.
    • My teacher genuinely listens to me when I talk.
    • My teacher makes time for me when I want to talk to him/her.

It is interesting to speculate what students might have to say about their communication with you, but with this instrument, and others like it, you can anticipate student responses by completing the form at the same time students do. Comparing a self-assessment with student feedback is a great way to learn more about the impact of teaching efforts on students?in this case the impact of communication exchanges.

Because the instrument is specific and detailed, it enables identification of areas of strength and weakness. As important is whether or not you can trust your assessments. If what you believe about your communication with students is verified by their feedback, that knowledge enables teaching with greater confidence. If not, the feedback offers insights that can lead to more accurate assessments of student responses. This applies not just to student-teacher interactions but to whatever aspect of teaching or student learning you and your students are assessing.

Instruments like this one can be used by practitioners to gain individual feedback. Obviously they cannot be used to collect research data without permission of the researchers.

Hospitalized Debbie Reynolds is on the mend

    Debbie Reynolds in April 2012.

    By Reuters

Veteran singer and actress Debbie Reynolds was hospitalized in Los Angeles over the weekend after a bad reaction to medication but is expected to be released on Wednesday, her manager said.?

"Ms. Reynolds had an adverse reaction to some medicine and is on the mend and hopefully will be released today," manager Milt Suchin said in an email. He did not provide details.?

Reynolds, 80, who starred in the classic movie musical "Singin' in the Rain" and dozens of other films in the 1950s and 1960s, is one of Hollywood's enduring legends.

Married three times, the actress shared a husband with Elizabeth Taylor when Eddie Fisher left Reynolds for her violet-eyed rival in a 1950s scandal. Reynolds also had her own TV comedy, "The Debbie Reynolds Show," in 1969, and continues to make guest appearances in movies and TV shows.

Celebrity website TMZ.com said Reynolds had canceled all upcoming appearances for the next three months. But Suchin said the actress was taking a "wait and see" approach based on the advice of doctors.

"It's too soon to make a decision right now. But the prognosis is excellent," Suchin said.

    DysautonomiaMD: The History of Menopause

It seems that the hysterectomy is still an ultimate alternative to menopause. ?Is this a good thing? ?In a 2004 study, it was found that Counseling and a Second Opinion physician determined that 98% of hysterectomies were not needed. ?Couple that with a 2010 study that estimated that about 500,000 hysterectomies are performed per year in the USA, such that 40% of all women over age 45 do not have a uterus. ?How many of these women are offered or are placed on hormone replacement therapy? ?

Should postmenopausal women, including those with Surgical Menopause, take hormones? ?For many practicing physicians, this is no longer a professional 'debate', it is a public debate that began with the Women's Health Initiative in 1992. ??Today, the issues are clear, as the treatment is individualized. ?Stay tuned for more.

As 2013 nears, it is important to understand that menopause is still a taboo subject for many women, in many cultures, and throughout the world. ?Women are embarrassed to talk about it, and some clam up when the doctor starts asking questions. ?Only after effective rapport is established will some women discuss the subject so that symptoms, time increments, and a proper Medical History can be reported. ?Women need to speak freely about the matter, so that the medical field can determine the problem, and work towards a solution for each individual woman. ?What is it all about? ?Quality of life. ?It's a Quality of Life issue.

Drudge Report Worth Hundreds Of Millions - Business Insider

Everyone knows about The Drudge Report, the site that journalist and entrepreneur Matt Drudge created more than a decade ago.

Everyone knows that The Drudge Report has an extraordinarily large readership, especially given the size of the team that produces it (maybe three people, including Drudge himself).

Everyone knows that The Drudge Report still sets the rest of the media world on tenterhooks from time to time by announcing that it has exclusive news forthcoming.

What few people know ? in part because of the apparent simplicity of the site ? is that Matt Drudge is arguably the single-most powerful individual in the digital news business.

What few people also know is that the deceptively simple Drudge Report is one of the most successful and profitable digital media businesses on the planet.

And here are some other things that few people know:

    • The Drudge Report is, at minimum, worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
    • Matt Drudge, presumably, created, funded, and owns all of it.
    • This combination of influence and wealth makes Matt Drudge one of the most successful digital media entrepreneurs in the world ? the Rupert Murdoch or William Randolph Hearst of the digital age.

    Don't believe it?

    Let's look at some numbers.

In short, the Drudge Report is almost as big a digital media property as The New York Times.

    That's absolutely staggering.

    Why?

Because The New York Times is produced by ~1,200 journalists. The Drudge Report is produced by one.

    And how about economics?

Economically, The Drudge Report is much smaller than The New York Times. But that's in part by design. And, importantly, The Drudge Report is likely highly profitable, which is not something that can always be said for The New York Times.

The Drudge Report doesn't have a salesforce. It works with a firm called Intermarkets to sell the ad units on its pages. The Drudge Report contains general news, often with a political slant, which means The Drudge Report likely gets relatively low revenue-per-page. (Say, $1.50 per 1000 pages). But The Drudge Report has a lot of pageviews.

Assuming The Drudge Report gets $1.50 per 1000 pages and has 1 billion pageviews per month, The Drudge Report should be generating revenue of $15-$20 million a year.

That doesn't sound like much, but, importantly, Drudge has very low tech, editorial, and sales costs.

So almost all of that is profit.

Assuming The Drudge Report pays the full corporate tax rate on those earnings, the business probably generates $10-$15 million of after-tax profit per year.

So, how much is The Drudge Report worth?

Media properties generally trade at a 15x-25x multiple of earnings, or a 4x-5x multiple of revenue, depending on the growth rate of the business and the level of profitability.

A range of 15x-25x earnings for the current incarnation of The Drudge Report, therefore, would produce an estimated value of $150 million to $375 million.

And those values, importantly, drastically understate the value that could be created if Matt Drudge decided to build it out into a more typical digital media business.

One of the most remarkable things about The Drudge Report is that the site's content still consists primarily of original headlines linked to stories elsewhere on the web. This is a highly innovative and efficient media model, one that takes full advantage of the amazing capabilities of the Internet.

The editorial content that Drudge creates, in other words, consists of finding and interpreting important stories from millions of information sources around the world. Rather than creating a huge newsroom itself, the Drudge Report uses the whole digital world as a newsroom. And, importantly, unlike many digital media businesses, Drudge compensates those who did the work of creating the content that Drudge links to by sending them hundreds of thousands of readers ? readers that they almost certainly would not have had had Drudge not chosen to link to them.

The Drudge Report, in other words, is not just a "win" for Drudge and its readers. It's a "win" for all of the content creators that Drudge links to, as well. So, everyone who creates content for a living should cheer for the success of The Drudge Report.

(In fact, given that news-business gurus still seem to be consumed with a perennial debate about the "future of news," it's time to recognize that, whatever that future is, The Drudge Report will be a highly successful and influential part of it. Traditional media organizations and journalism schools may not like that. But it's the truth.)

If and when Drudge wanted to, moreover, he could begin to build a small tactical newsroom of his own, along with a dedicated ad sales force. With almost no effort, these additions could double or triple the number of pageviews the site produces, along with the amount of revenue that The Drudge Report generates from them. Such investments might reduce the number of readers Drudge sends to other sites, but they would not stop this traffic flow completely. And they would likely make the site worth 2-3X as much as it is today.

In short, Matt Drudge has not just created a quirky little headlines-and-links site that occasionally breaks news.

He has created one of the most innovative, successful, and profitable digital media businesses on the planet, one that is likely worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

It's time he got some credit for that.

(AP) ? In what sounded at times like a locker room pep talk, Jerry Sandusky rambled in his red prison suit about being the underdog in the fourth quarter, about forgiveness, about dogs and about the movie "Seabiscuit."

With his accusers seated behind him in the courtroom, he denied committing "disgusting acts" against children and instead painted himself as the victim.

And then, after he had said his piece, a judge sentenced him to 30 to 60 years in prison Tuesday, all but ensuring the 68-year-old Sandusky will spend the rest of his life behind bars for the child sexual abuse scandal that brought disgrace to Penn State and triggered the downfall of his former boss, football coach Joe Paterno.

He leaves behind a trail of human and legal wreckage that could take years for the university to clear away.

"The tragedy of this crime is that it's a story of betrayal. The most obvious aspect is your betrayal of 10 children," Judge John Cleland said after a hearing in which three of the men Sandusky was convicted of molesting as boys confronted him face to face and told of the lasting pain he had inflicted.

The judge said he expects Sandusky to die in prison.

In a disjointed, 15-minute address before he learned his sentence, Sandusky said: "In my heart I did not do these alleged disgusting acts."

Sprinkling his remarks with sports references, the former assistant coach spoke of being locked up in a jail cell, subjected to outbursts from fellow inmates, reading inspirational books and trying to find a purpose in his fate. His voice cracked as he talked about missing his loved ones, including his wife, Dottie, who was in the gallery.

"Hopefully we can get better as a result of our hardship and suffering, that somehow, some way, something good will come out of this," Sandusky said.

He also spoke of instances in which he helped children and did good works in the community, adding: "I've forgiven, I've been forgiven. I've comforted others, I've been comforted. I've been kissed by dogs, I've been bit by dogs. I've conformed, I've also been different. I've been me. I've been loved, I've been hated."

Sandusky was convicted in June of 45 counts, found guilty of raping or fondling boys he had met through the acclaimed youth charity he founded, The Second Mile. He plans to appeal, arguing among other things that his defense was not given enough time to prepare for trial after his arrest last November.

Among the victims who spoke in court Tuesday was a young man who said he was 11 when Sandusky groped him in a shower in 1998. He said Sandusky is in denial and should "stop coming up with excuses."

"I've been left with deep painful wounds that you caused and had been buried in the garden of my heart for many years," he said.

Another man said he was 13 in 2001 when Sandusky lured him into a Penn State sauna and then a shower and forced him to touch the ex-coach. "I am troubled with flashbacks of his naked body, something that will never be erased from my memory," he said.

After the sentencing, prosecutor Joe McGettigan praised the victims' courage and dismissed Sandusky's comments as "a masterpiece of banal self-delusion, completely untethered from reality and without any acceptance of responsibility."

"It was entirely self-focused as if he, again, were the victim," McGettigan said.

Lawyers for the victims said they were satisfied with the sentence, but with four lawsuits brought against Penn State and several more expected, and Penn State laboring under severe NCAA penalties, cleaning up in the wake of what may be the biggest scandal in college sports history may take years.

Ben Andreozzi, an attorney for one the victims, said the university needs to do more: "It's important they understand before we get into serious discussions about money, that there are other, noneconomic issues. We need apologies. We need changes in policy. This isn't just about money."

Penn State fired Paterno after Sandusky's arrest, and the coach died of lung cancer three months later. The scandal also brought down university President Graham Spanier.

Two university administrators, Gary Schultz and Tim Curley, are awaiting trial in January on charges they failed to properly report suspicions about Sandusky and lied to the grand jury that investigated him.

Over the summer, an investigation commissioned by Penn State and led by former FBI Director Louis Freeh concluded that Paterno and other top officials covered up allegations against Sandusky for more than a decade to avoid bad publicity.

After the report came out, the NCAA fined Penn State a record $60 million, barred the football team from postseason play for four years, cut the number of scholarships it can award, and erased 14 years of victories for Paterno, stripping him of his standing as the winningest coach in the history of big-time college football.

In a three-minute recorded statement aired Monday night by Penn State radio, Sandusky described himself as the victim of a "well-orchestrated effort" by his accusers, the media, Penn State, plaintiffs' attorneys and others ? a claim the judge dismissed on Tuesday as an unbelievable conspiracy theory.

"I speak today with hope in my heart for a brighter day, not knowing if that day will come," Sandusky said. "Many moments have been spent looking for a purpose. Maybe it will help others, some vulnerable children who might have been abused, might not be, as a result of the publicity."

After the sentencing, Penn State President Rodney Erickson said in a statement: "Our thoughts today, as they have been for the last year, go out to the victims of Jerry Sandusky's abuse. While today's sentence cannot erase what has happened, hopefully it will provide comfort to those affected by these horrible events."
