'Voice' coaches fight for 'Big Bang' star's sis

"The Voice's" universe was in a hot dense state Monday night, when two coaches fought to keep Briana Cuoco, the younger sister of "Big Bang Theory" star Kaley Cuoco. 

The Battle Rounds are all about the steals, and Christina Aguilera started the fracas when she picked Jacquie Lee over Cuoco (thus costing her any chance at a guest gig as Penny's long-lost cousin on the hit CBS sitcom). In response, both CeeLo Green and Blake Shelton pushed their buttons.

CeeLo spoke first. "I believe that there's a story in your voice and I want to help nurture your niche, so I think you could do very well here on Team CeeLo," he said. Then he turned to Blake and said, "Beat that."

That got Adam Levine cheering — but sadly for him, Blake could, indeed, beat that. And without even bringing his A game.

"I have a feeling how you performed that song that you're probably a songwriter, and how you really connect with the lyrics like that, it's almost as possible not to be," he said.

What? What kind of sales pitch is that?! That's not a desperate plea — it's a statement of fact. But it was enough for Cuoco, even though CeeLo had also pushed for her at the blind auditions.

"I wanted to steal Briana because I think that she can shape-shift so to speak and be different things. But I got other steals, and I got other chicks up my short sleeves," CeeLo said.

Aw, CeeLo. Don't be mad. Maybe you can at least get the consolation prize and write a new "Big Bang Theory" theme song to replace the Barenaked Ladies version. After all, it's not like they ever tried to help Cuoco's singing career.

"Why is Adam such an idiot?"
Blake now has to wait until the Knockout Rounds before he can push his button again. He'd previously started the night off by swiping Nic Hawk from Adam after Nic lost his sing-along to wedding singer Grey.

"Aw, Adam, you screwed up so bad!" Blake said once the results were announced, causing Nic to break down in tears.

"Why are you stealing Nic Hawk?" host Carson Daly asked.

"Why is Adam such an idiot?" Blake replied. "Why don't you ask me that?"

"You delivered an excellent vocal performance and you did all that other crap that you do," Blake then told Nic. "Will you teach me how to dance?"

"Hell yeah, I'll teach you how to dance," Nic said.

That might be a tougher task than winning "The Voice" — but it'll definitely be an interesting pairing to watch going forward.

"If there ever was an odd couple, it's me and Nic," said Blake. "I think this is gonna be a lot of fun."

Love for Anthony
The other contender for top battle of the night was from Team CeeLo, with Anthony Paul taking on Caroline Pennell in a duet of "As Long As You Love Me." The song may be Justin Bieber, but the dark arrangement suited Caroline's unique vocal stylings and caused CeeLo to get downright poetic in his praise.

"There's something so surreal about your voice," he said. "It encourages me to dream with my eyes open."

"CeeLo! I love that line," responded Christina. "That's beautiful," 

Maybe that swayed her heart, because after CeeLo picked Caroline and urged the other judges, "Steal him … someone!" Christina pushed her button and got him.

"Christina stole Anthony, and it's bittersweet. I think that I was wrong pairing them together," CeeLo said.

Cher + Adam?
Blake and guest mentor Cher only had one battle on Monday's show, but it was enough to make Blake a little jealous of one of his fellow coaches.

Blake urged both Justin Chain and Shelbie Z to bring their best to their battle, noting how much Adam would love to steal one of his country singers. 

"I love Adam!" Cher said.

"Oh you do?" Blake said, then challenged, "What's your favorite song he does?"

That gave Cher pause. "Oh, they're all so good," she said.

So maybe she doesn't have any Maroon 5 songs on her iPod. But that might explain why Blake stole Nic, who said at the auditions that Adam might be too good-looking to work with. Best to keep those with a crush on his fellow coach nearby.

But Adam didn't return the favor by stealing Justin, and the country crooner went home after Blake stuck with Shelbie.

Sarah Kaufman: The silent, violent showstopper

One of the greatest fights of 2012 came on the same fight card as one of the most memorable. Sarah Kaufman and Alexis Davis fought in Columbus in March of that year, a Strikeforce event that was headlined by Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate. Everyone remembers Rousey contorting Tate’s arm into alarming states of disfigurement en-route to winning the bantamweight belt.

Less remembered was the ridiculous fight Kaufman gave Davis (and vice-versa).

In the encounter, the former bantamweight champion Kaufman and Davis stood toe-to-toe and traded dukes, kicks and elbows, tossed, rag-dolled, and strafed each other, clawed, kneed and pummeled one another to the edge of physical endurance. It wasn’t the tired old cliché of Bonnar-Griffin, which was the right fight at the right time; it was quieter due to its placement. This was two smiling forward-moving heathens doing it for the joy of fighting. It was clear that both Davis and Kaufman were enjoying themselves capitally from bell to bell.

As Kaufman gets set to make her UFC debut on Saturday night in Houston against Jessica Eye, the British Columbian war horse wouldn’t mind giving the fans another hissing live wire of a fight like that one with Davis. Or even Leslie Smith, who was her latest casualty from the Invicta cage last April.

The only thing she needs is an accommodating opponent.

"Honestly, with both Alexis and Leslie, we all have such similar styles we all like to get in there and throw down, and those are the fights I like," Kaufman told MMA Fighting. "To me that’s fun. Getting hit, hitting back, having that challenge of who can go longer and faster and harder…those are the fights I love. And the fans love them, too.

"Those are the fights you make your name off of. Granted, if I got a five-second knockout, how happy would I be? Wee, happy! But I also love feeling when I leave like I was in a fight."

If Kaufman isn’t shotgun to the UFC’s bantamweight title, she’s at least in the vehicle. She defeated Miesha Tate -- who will get her rematch with Rousey at UFC 168 in December -- back in 2009. So there’s leverage for a title push were she to get past Eye.

But it’s complicated in the new wilderness of the women’s bantamweight division. Kaufman already fought Rousey in August 2012 and lost via armbar in less than a minute. That loss exists on historical record, even if the UFC doesn’t like to carry over history from other promotions (even the ones Zuffa owns). And then there’s the hovering presence of Cat Zingano, who was supposed to be in the contender’s seat right now before a knee injury forced her to the sidelines.

Where Kaufman sits in the division is…somewhere near the top.

"I could see with a good win [over Eye], depending on when Cat Zingano is back, giving me a fight with Cat, or giving me a title shot right away," Kaufman says. "I’ve already fought Liz Carmouche. I’ve already fought Alexis Davis. I’ve already fought Miesha Tate. But, honestly, I feel like Cat Zingano would be a pretty interesting fight for that next shot at the title."

Not that she’s looking past Eye, who is coming off a victory over Carina Damm and is riding a seven-fight winning streak overall. Eye is also making her UFC debut, and has looked better each time out in her NAAFS and Bellator bouts.

"I think she’s a great opponent, and that it’s a very exciting fight for the fans – and it’s a very exciting fight for me," Kaufman says. "It’s going to get me in there and give me the opportunity to let loose a little bit, and have some fun. By ‘have fun’ I mean serious and focused, but I like fighting. I don’t like to have to worry too much about, what if they try and stall the fight to wrestle me down? Or whatever the case may be. I like those exciting fights and the opportunity to let loose. It’s what I like to do -- let loose and have fun in the cage."

Kaufman was supposed to have made her UFC debut in August against Sarah McMann, but McMann was forced to pull out with a personal issue. She calls the bait-and-switch "very frustrating," though she’s had enough experience in the spotlight to know how to roll with the punches.

"If five people are watching, or if five million people are watching, I want to perform the same," she says. "I’m ready. I’ve performed at some of the biggest stages of the world already, and so this is the next step up for me."

SoftBank to take 57 percent stake in phone distributor Brightstar for $1.26 billion

Stake in company to grow to 70 percent over next five years

After purchasing a majority stake in Sprint earlier this year, Japanese carrier SoftBank is eyeing an investment in U.S. phone distributor Brightstar. The deal will see SoftBank take a 57 percent stake in the company for $1.26 billion in cash, and has already been approved by SoftBank's board. Brightstar is a name you may not have heard of before, but is one of the biggest phone distributors (acting between manufacturers and retailers) with a presence in over 50 countries worldwide.

The deal will make Brightstar the exclusive distributor of handsets to some SoftBank affiliates, presumably including Sprint here in the U.S. Along with its investment in Sprint, SoftBank's stake in Brightstar could give it a better foothold on securing the latest devices for its carriers. The deal is still in need of regulatory approval, but is expected to close by the end of 2013, the companies said.

Tesla's Elon Musk Revealed as James Bond Submarine Car Buyer

The winning bidder for the Lotus Esprit featured in the underwater sequence in The Spy Who Loved Me that sold at auction in London last month has been identified as Elon Musk, the futurist and Tesla Motors CEO. 

According to Jalopnik, Musk and another buyer engaged in a heated bidding war before Musk landed the submersible Esprit for $968,000. A longtime car enthusiast, Musk is said to have based the design of the first Tesla on the Lotus Elise. Tesla PR also told the car blog that Musk plans to add a Tesla drive train to the car and will attempt to make it transform into a working submarine.

"It was amazing as a little kid in South Africa to watch James Bond in The Spy Who Loved Me drive his Lotus Esprit off a pier, press a button and have it transform into a submarine underwater. I was disappointed to learn that it can't actually transform," Musk said. "What I'm going to do is upgrade it with a Tesla electric powertrain and try to make it transform for real."

The James Bond car was discovered covered in blankets in 1989 by a Long Island building contractor in a storage container purchased for $100. 

The Ian Fleming Foundation later authenticated the car as the vehicle used in the movie. It had been placed in storage after the film was released and remained there for 10 years until the storage fee was forfeited. The contractor who purchased the container at first had no idea that the car was the same one used in the Bond movie.

In The Spy Who Loved Me, Roger Moore, as 007, under pursuit from a helicopter, drives the car off the end of a pier into the sea. The Lotus retracts its wheels, sprouts stabilizers and rudders, and skims just below the water's surface.

"I believe it's time we've said goodbye to an uninvited guest," Moore tells the nonplussed Barbara Bach, riding shotgun. When Moore presses a button on the dashboard, a missile streaks from the car, destroying the helicopter.

This was the first time the Esprit had been offered for sale since its discovery. The 1964 Aston Martin DB5 used in Goldfinger and Thunderball sold for $4.6 million in 2010.
