College Hoops: RVC men stay hot with N4C-Conference victory

ROCKFORD ? They didn?t make it easy, but Rock Valley College snared its 10th men?s basketball win in the past 12 games and fourth in a row by holding off Harper 74-67 Saturday.

The Golden Eagles (11-7, 2-0 N4C) matched Harper (7-10, 0-2) with 20 turnovers and made just two of its 13 3-pointers in the second half as a double-digit halftime lead turned into a battle in the second half.

But led by Quentin Canty?s 20 points and six rebounds, RVC has turned a 1-5 start into an N4C-Conference leading run. And it took a team effort Saturday as leading scorer Blake McElroy was 2-for-16 from the field.

?I don?t think we believed in ourselves in the beginning of the season,? Canty said. ?Nowadays we definitely do. We believe, and we?re making it happen. We?ve just got to make sure we figure out a way to keep it going.?

Harper took a 55-54 lead midway and tied the game late at 67. But a baseline layup by Brandon Schwebke (12 points, eight rebounds) and a jumper in the lane by Aaron Rimkus (13 points) put RVC back in control. The Golden Eagles got 43 points from their bench.

?We?re not the biggest or the fastest, but we pride ourselves on executing our offense and beating teams with ball movement. We?re rolling right now,? coach Craig Doty said.

MSOE 64, Rockford 53: Rockford College fell to 3-3 in the Northern Athletics Conference despite 15 points from both Grant Olsen and Tory Minnifield. Minnifield also grabbed 11 rebounds and David Dixon chipped in with 10 points off the bench, but Rockford (5-10) could not hold onto its one-point halftime lead.

Women
RVC 100, Harper 44:
The Rock Valley women continued to dominate teams, rolling to a 66-point victory after scoring 100 for the first time this season.

The Golden Eagles shot 54 percent (19-for-35) from the field in the second half and had four players score in double digits in the game.

?I have been harping on them lately about their effort, and about the little things. Today they got; today they really played hard out there,? RVC (16-2) head coach Misty Opat said. ?Today I think we got things back on track a little. We?ve been winning lately, but we?re trying to set ourselves up for something bigger, so we have to think that way.?

Autumn Korotasz was 3-for-9 from 3-point range and scored 17 points while grabbing six rebounds. Shantiera Miller was 6-for-8 from the floor and scored 16 points while Marquiesha Grant and Ashely Dorsey tallied 15 points apiece in the blowout win.

Rockford 57, MSOE 46: Rockford?s Nicole Lawler tallied a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds to help the Regents roll to the win. Sherrell Woods scored 12 and Erin Ryczek added 10 points in the win for Rockford (4-12, 2-6 NAC).
